Do You Value Your Time

How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while,” then it’s gone. (James 4:14)

Time is valuable, but I don’t think we really understand just how valuable it is. When we are younger, we want to rush time along. “I can’t wait to get out of school!” “I can’t wait to get out of work!” “I can’t wait until Friday gets here!” “I can’t wait until my baby can walk!” “I can’t wait until I retire!” and the list goes on. We hurry to get home, we can’t wait for the next vacation, the next payday, the next birthday (depending how old you are 🙂 ), etc. We make all sorts of future plans but never really invite God into those plans. Then before we know it, we are 50, 60, 70 years old or more and we wonder where time went. My mother used to always say “Wait until you are my age. Time flies as you get older”. How true that is! I told my husband a few times “I feel like for quite a while we were climbing up that mountain and time seemed a bit slow, but once I hit a certain age, I feel like I’m rolling down the other side of that mountain and time is flying!” How right my mom was.

I remember when my aunt used to talk about her plans for the next day or in the future, from going on a trip to something as simple as going to the grocery store, and she always used to end it with “God willing”. She had it right because everything in life is if God wills it. We live and move only at the permission of God. This is why we should include Him in everything. In James 4:15, James also states: “What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”

Time is valuable and we must use it wisely. We must use it to share the gospel and serve others, heal, work, pray, study and read His Word, but also to rest and enjoy life because God also wants us to enjoy the life He has given to us. We must not waste the precious time God has given to us by fighting and arguing, being critical of others, being ungrateful, unforgiving, idolatrous and complacent. Life is short. Remember, it’s all about eternity.

Take the time to ask God to show you if you value the time He has given you or if you take it for granted and waste it. Make a change. Time is of the essence.
