Do You Use Godly Wisdom or Human Wisdom?

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

(James 3:17-18)

How do you resolve issues? How do you get your point across? Most of us would like to think we are wise in our understanding and can speak eloquently enough so that the other person would understand what we are saying and life would be great! Unfortunately it doesn’t always work out that way. Many times it seems like a blip in our communication and understanding and before you know it we are in an argument over whose right. The bible states we are to have godly wisdom, but what’s the difference between godly wisdom and human wisdom?

First let’s look at what wisdom is. Wisdom is insight; the ability to discern or judge what is true or right. It is the ability to see things from a different perspective that many times others don't see. When we think of someone who is wise, we think of someone who is scholarly and who have much education but the bible states God will frustrate who consider themselves wise and intelligent (those with human wisdom):

1 Corinthians 1:19-20

For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

Why would God want to frustrate those who are educated and wise? Human wisdom is limited and can only see and understand so far, but godly wisdom transcends the limitations of the mind. It comes from someone higher than ourselves, one who knows more, sees more and understands more…God. Humans make mistakes and can misunderstand but God makes no mistakes and therefore understands all things. Since human wisdom comes from a limited mind, man can be selfish and boastful, claiming all thoughts as his own. With godly wisdom, those it is given to take no credit for their understanding of things…they give the glory to the one it came from…God. With human wisdom, man only understands the physical…that which he can see, but with godly wisdom we are able to understand past the physical to things that are unseen because God gives us the wisdom to see things more clearly than what we are seeing before us.

Proverbs 21:30

There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.

Proverbs 28:26

He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.

Luke 21:15

For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

Christ tells his disciples about the signs of the end times and that they should not fear what to say when they are arrested and brought before courts. He states that he will give them the words and wisdom that their enemies will not be able to refute or contradict. In other words Christ will give us understanding that surpasses the human understanding of things. He will give us words to speak.

1 Corinthians 2:13

This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

We are to seek godly wisdom at all times especially when we are dealing with people and there are issues and problems that need to be solved. Godly wisdom will help us to see past the surface of the situation or the person and understand things better. God will give us the words to speak so that others will understand and we can come to a peaceful resolution. Godly wisdom does not boast, it is not arrogant, it does not condemn, seek to intimidate through loudness of voice or a stern behavior, or seek selfish ambition. Those things are worldly and come from Satan:

James 3:14-16

But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

A person with godly wisdom doesn’t have to use big words or speak eloquently to make themselves look wise as Paul states he did not come this way when proclaiming the testimony about God:

1 Corinthians 2:1-3

When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling.

Paul was able to give the testimony of God through simple words. In turn, God will give us simple words of wisdom to pass to others. We do not have to intimidate others into understanding as our humbleness and simple, yet wise words from God will be enough.

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

So how do we receive such godly wisdom? Do we go to school for it? No, we simply ask God for it:

James 1:5-8

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

We have to believe than when we ask for wisdom, we will receive it. We must have faith!

Proverbs is all about wisdom and below are just a few of many:

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 2:12

Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse

Proverbs 3:13

Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding

Proverbs 10:23

A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct, but a man of understanding delights in wisdom.

Proverbs 13:10

Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

Proverbs 19:11

A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.

Are you in a situation where you need godly wisdom and understanding? Do you seek it? Pray today that God grants you his godly wisdom and understanding of all situations you encounter so you may overcome every hurdle and obstacle that comes before you and understand his glorious word…the Bible.

Heavenly Father, I thank you and praise you for this day. Father, today I ask for your godly wisdom to understand not only your word, but to understand all situations I encounter in order to seek a peaceful resolution. Help me to understand past the limits of my mind and see things through your eyes. Give me the words to speak that will help others to understand your word as well. I do not doubt and believe that I will receive this wonderful godly wisdom and understanding that your word says you offer me. In Jesus name I pray…Amen.
